Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hanna L. KARLSSON

Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, EU

Positions: Associate Professor in Toxicology and principal researcher, Karolinska Institutet - Institute of Environmental Medicine, Stockholm, Sweden.

Specialization: Toxicity of nanomaterials; Development of new cell-based assays to enable replacement of animal experiments.

At the NANOCON´25 conference Hanna Karlsson will present her invited talk “Assessing Nanoparticle Toxicity Using In Vitro Models: Quick Methods vs. Complex Approaches” in the Session D – Monitoring and Toxicity of Nanomaterials.

Personal Background and Education:

Hanna L. Karlsson received her PhD in Medical Sciences at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden (2006). She also carried out postdoctoral research at Karolinska Institutet.

In 2016 she was appointed an Associate Professor in Toxicology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet. In the period 2014-2022 she acted as the vice Chair and Chair at the Karolinska Institutet Council for Environment and Sustainable Development. She is principal researcher at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet from the year 2016.

She also teaches in the Master's Programme in Toxicology and has for many years worked
with issues related to the environment and sustainable development at the Karolinska Institutet.

Research interests:

Hanna Karlsson leads the research group Particle toxicology. Research interests of this group are mainly about understanding the toxicity of nanoparticles and underlying mechanisms. Toxic effects of nanoparticles from different types of transport, toxic effects of welding particles and particles from 3D printing, effects of nano-and microplastics, as well as skin sensitizing properties of chemical and mixtures are some examples of research projects she is working on. The problematics of nanoparticle emissions from the transport sector was the topic of the 55 months research project (supported from the EU Horizon 2020 program) finalized in November 2024.

Another research focus of Hanna Karlsson´s group is the development of new cell-based assays to enable replacement of animal experiments (3R).

Summary of publication activity:

Author/co-author of 70 papers in international peer-reviewed journals; The number of total citations > 9.800 and H-index: 41 (Google Scholar, April 2025); ORCID ID .
