Personal Background and Education:
Jan Macák (*1979) was born in Pardubice. He received MEng in 2003 from the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague and completed his postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Environmental Protection, the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague. In 2008 he defended his dissertation on the preparation of TiO2 nanotubes by titanium anodization at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany) and received Ph.D. degree in Materials Science. Then he worked for three years in the private sector (Elmarco Ltd., Agrovýzkum Rapotín, Ltd.). In 2012 he joined the University of Pardubice and he has been working in various positions: as a researcher, later on he became a senior researcher and the group leader. Since 2015, Dr. Macák has been working as a senior researcher at the Centre for Materials and Nanotechnologies (CEMNAT) of the Faculty of Chemical Technology. From 2018 he also works as a senior researcher at the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) of the Brno University of Technology. 

Research Interests and main results:
Dr. Macák is active in the field of material science and is engaged in the development of new low-dimensional structures (such as nanotubes, nanolayers, nanofibers) using various methods. Also included are necessary analyses of the structure of these materials with respect to their properties. The most promising materials are subsequently used in various applications, e.g. in solar cells, catalysts, batteries, etc., together with cooperating partners.

In 2014 he received financial support from the European Research Council (ERC Starting grant) for the project Chromtisol devoted to development of a new type of solar cells based on nanotubular titania.

Dr. Jan Macák works also at the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) in Brno as the leader of the research group Advanced Low-Dimensional Nanomaterials. Its research is focused on the synthesis of new low-dimensional structures such as nanotubes, nanolayers, nanofibers, in various ways. Research of the group also includes the necessary investigation of the relationship between the structure and the properties of these materials. The most promising materials are explored in various areas such as photovoltaics, catalysis, batteries, etc.

Publication activity and Awards:
He has authored and co-authored >250 works that have been cited for almost 24.000 times. Hirsch index: 66 (June 2023). He is in the TOP 10 of the most cited Czech scientists.

For his outstanding scientific achievements, and in recognition of his scientific research work, He received several prestigious awards, including Neuron Award 2015 for outstanding achievements of young scientist in the field of chemistry, and the TechConnect Award 2019 for innovation.
