Prof. Dr. Giuseppe BARILLARO

Information Engineering Department of the University of Pisa, Italy

Position: Full Professor of Electronics at the Information Engineering Department of the University of Pisa, Italy, where he has been leading the research group focused on micro- and nanotechnologies for sensing, biomedicine, and advanced electronic materials.

Specialization: Preparation of micro and nanostructured materials, devices and systems with applications in (nano)photonics, microelectronics, (bio)sensing, and (nano)medicine.

At the NANOCON´26 Giuseppe Barillaro will present the invited talk ”Implantable and biodegradable sensors for precision medicine: from analog to digital sensing” in the Session C – Bionanotechnology, Nanomaterials in Medicine.

Personal Background and Education:

G. Barillaro received his M.Sc. degree in Electronics Engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1998. He subsequently earned his Ph.D. degree in Information Engineering from the same university in 2002.

Following the completion of his doctoral studies, he served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Information Engineering, University of Pisa (11/2002 to 11/2005). During this period, his research focused on the design, modeling, fabrication, and characterization of novel silicon-based materials and microsystems, encompassing photonics, microelectronics, MEMS, sensors, and emerging biomedical applications. In December 2005 he was appointed Researcher (Ricercatore) at the University of Pisa. He subsequently advanced through the academic ranks, becoming Associate Professor and later Full Professor of Electronics. In 2009, 2017, and 2023 he was visiting researcher at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), USA, in the group of Prof. M. J. Sailor. Since 2018 he is visiting professor at Ecole Supérieure des Mines, France.

Over the course of his career, he developed a research program that evolved from silicon photonics and microfabrication toward biosensors, biomedical microsystems, organ-on-chip platforms, and bioresorbable implantable devices.

Research interests:

Research of Giuseppe Barillaro focuses on micro and nanostructured materials, sensors and biosensors, microelectronics and nanoelectronics, biomedical engineering, and nanomedicine.

Selected Achievements:

  • Coordinator of European Horizon Europe EIC Pathfinder Open project ALERT (www.alert-project.eu), focused on the development of digital microneedles for early detection of Alzheimer disease.
  • Coordinator of the European Horizon Europe EIC Pathfinder Open project RESORB (www.resorb-project.eu), which develops biodegradable implantable systems for clinical monitoring.
  • Directed the research on digital QR-code microneedles for multianalyte transdermal sensing published in Advanced Materials.
  • Led the development of an ultra-thin bioresorbable biosensor capable of monitoring chemotherapy drug uptake in tumors in real time, with results published in Science Advances.
