Personal Background and Education:

Professor Mark Rümmeli (born in Switzerland) studied Physics and Computer Electronics at London Metropolitan University, U.K., and obtained a PhD in Analytical Chemistry and Plasma Physics. He has an illustrious career spanning various international roles. After completing his doctorate, he devoted several years to developing e-learning platforms for healthcare education in the United States and the West Indies.

He then made significant contributions to the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), a prestigious joint venture between the German Space Agency (DLR) and NASA. Following his tenure at SOFIA, Professor Rümmeli joined the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Science in Germany. Here, he was instrumental in establishing the Molecular Nanostructures Group, which he continues to lead as a guest professor.

His academic journey further led him to the Republic of South Korea, where he served as a professor in the Department of Energy Science at Sungkyunkwan University. Concurrently, he founded the Structural Analysis Group at the Korean Institute of Basic Science.

Professor Rümmeli's expertise then took him to China, where he joined Soochow University. He holds dual roles there, serving as a professor at the College of Energy and the Soochow Institute for Energy & Materials Innovations (SIEMIS) where he maintains a research group. Additionally, he is a visiting professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Currently, Professor Rümmeli is leading the EBEAM project as the ERA Chair Holder at VSB Ostrava (Czech Republic), an initiative funded by the European Union. His global collaborations are extensive and include partnerships with renowned institutions such as Peking University, the University of Oxford, NASA Ames Research Laboratories, Wuhan University, Cornell University, and the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT), among others.

Research interests:

Research interests of M. Rümmeli are nanostructures, their synthesis and management of their properties. In the last years he is focused particularly to the study of the potential of electron beams to manipulate atoms and to create precisely structured materials on an atomic or near-atomic scale.

Summary of publication activity:
