Prof. Dr. Volker PRESSER, FRSC

Saarene-Saarland Center for Energy Materials & Sustainability, Saarbrücken, Germany, EU

Position: Program Division Leader at INM – Leibniz Institute for New Materials, Saarbrücken; Managing director of the Saarene-Saarland Center for Energy Materials & Sustainability, Saarbrücken; Full Professor, Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany

Specialization: Energy materials – energy storage, water treatment and carbon hybrid materials

At the NANOCON´23 conference Prof. Volker Presser will perform the opening plenary lecture: “Electrochemical Ion Management at the Energy/water Research Nexus”.

Personal Background and Education:
Prof. Volker Presser received a Ph.D. in natural sciences (Summa cum laude) from the Eberhard Karls University, Tübingen, Germany (2009), Masters in mineralogy (Magna cum laude) from the same university (2006). From 1/2010 to 5/2012, he worked as Humboldt Fellow (and later as Research Assistant Professor) at Drexel University, Philadelphia, USA. From 06/2012 to 11/2015 he worked at the INM – Leibniz Institute for New Materials, Saarbrücken, Germany, as a Junior Research Group Leader. Since 4/2013, he is a professor at Saarland University (Saarbrücken, Germany; 2013-2015: Assistant Professor; since 2015: Full Professor). He is currently a Managing Director of SAARENE – SAARLAND Center for Energy, Materials and Sustainability, Saarbrücken, Germany, (since 6/2021). He is also Editor-In-Chief of Energy Advances (Royal Society of Chemistry; since 12/2015).

Research interests:
Prof. Volker Presser and his group synthesize, characterize, and apply functional nanomaterials. They use electrochemistry to enable, among others, energy storage (supercapacitors, redox electrolytes, batteries), water treatment (desalination, pollutant removal), and tailored ion recovery (esp. Lithium recovery. Combined with material characterization techniques, they use in-situ methods to gain novel insights into electrochemical processes. They also implement the development of sustainable synthesis and materials along with recycling, up-cycling, and second life applications.
