University of Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy, EU
Position: Assoc. Professor at Department of Chemical and Geological Science, University of Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy, EU
Specialization: bio-nanointerfaces, enzyme/proteins-nanostructures interactions, Ion Specific Effects, functionalized mesoporous materials.
At the NANOCON´22 conference Assoc. Prof. Andrea Salis will present the opening lecture at the Session B Industrial and Environmental Applications of Nanomaterials.
Personal Background and Education:
Andrea Salis (AS) graduated in Chemistry in 1997 (110/110 cum laude) at the University of Cagliari (UniCA). From January 1998 to March 1999, he was Lieutenant in the Engineering Corp of the Italian Army (Center for Chemistry, Physics and Biology, Civitavecchia, Rome). From 1999 he started a PhD in Chemistry at UniCA during which he worked for 6 months as a visiting PhD student at Lund University (Sweden). He has been a postdoc (2002-2006) and adjunct professor (2012-2013) in physical chemistry at UniCA and Research Fellow (2014) at the Research School of Physics and Engineering (Australian National University) in Canberra (Australia). Since 2015 AS is associate professor in Physical Chemistry at UniCA.
The research of A. Salis is focused on the study of bio-nanointerfaces, particularly on the interactions of proteins/enzymes with nanostructures and their applications in nanomedicine and nanobiocatalysis. A great part of his studies where devoted to understanding the specific effect of strong and weak electrolytes (“Hofmeister” effects) in biochemical systems.
The team of A. Salis saw, for the first time, the real location of human lysozyme molecules adsorbed onto SBA-15 mesoporous silica through the combination of an immunochemical technique based on post-embedding immunogold staining (IGS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). His current research involves the use of functional nanomaterials as carriers for drug delivery, or adsorbents/catalysts for removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from water.
Summary of publication activity:
Co-author of over 85 scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals that were cited more than 4300 times, H-index 37.
Teaching: Course of Physical Chemistry of Interfaces; Environmental Physical Chemistry (MD in Chemical Sciences); Physical Chemistry with lab (BD in Biotechnology), and Light Scattering Techniques (PhD School in Chemical Science and Technology).
He is a member of the Editorial section board of Physical Chemistry of the International Journal of Molecular Science (IF: 5.924), and member of the editorial board of Phys Chem (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/physchem/editors).
In 2021 he was co-Chair of the international conference INTERFACES (https://convegni.unica.it/interfaces/)
His works were recognized and featured on the 7 covers in JCR journals.
